Ruggers Demolish
N.C. State By 26-10

By Bill Nachman
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

Getting back into a winning
habit, the Virginia Rugby A side
trounced the Wolfpack of N.C.
State Sunday, 26-10, in Raleigh.
The Turques, playing with many
members of the third team, fell to
N.C. B, 13-5.

Courtney Hoopes paced the
Virginia A's effort with one of his
best performances ever. Courtney
raced into the try zone three times
on runs of 15, 40, and 80 yards, the
latter coming when he broke
through all 15 Carolinians for a
score.

Hoopes' nine points were
outdone by wing Peter Schmidt,
who hit the scoreboard for 11.
Schmidt made good on four
conversion attempts and also added
a try a nifty 25 yarder.

Other Virginia scores were tries
by Wick Williams and Joe Jennings,
who was appearing in his first A
match. Jennings, who is replacing
Ronnie Pulliam at one wing until he
recovers from a slipped disc in his
back, scampered for a 35 yard
three-pointer, while Wick Williams
scored a "quickie" from a loose
scrum when Mike Scheer made the
setup.

Virginia, which led 16-5 at the
half, controlled scrum play
throughout the afternoon. Twice
when N.C. State came knocking at

the door the experienced Virginians
held inside the two yard line.
Scheer and Jay Waldron, Club
president, anchored the eight man
scrum from their positions in the
second row. The other scrummers
— all of whom deserve recognition
— are Steve Bolton (hooker),
"Chicago" Ahrens and Ralph
Robertson (props), John Peerson
(lock), Dwight Van Horne and Rick
Lawton (wing forwards).

The Wolfpack had trouble
getting unwound against the
visitors. Sporting several players
from England and Ireland, the N.C.
State squad truly came out looking
for their seventh win against a lone
defeat, but they were not to see
win number seven Sunday.

The Turques (B) fell to an
experienced N.C. State second side,
13-5. The loss is more readily
understood when one considers the
fact that many regulars did not
travel to Raleigh because of
fraternity commitments and
hourlies.

Bob Dart, at fly, scored the lone
try, and Paul Bishop rammed home
the conversion for the lone Turque
tallies.

Thursday evening a raffle will
take place to help raise money for a
trip to Nassau at spring vacation.
All dormitories will be visited by
members of the Club so that those
interested can purchase raffle
tickets.
