NCAA Playoff Tournament Will Make Title Repeat Difficult For Cavalier Stickmen

Rules and Tournament
Committee chairman, R. Bruce
Allison of Union College, recently
announced the format
for the first NCAA lacrosse
playoff ever. The tourney will
be an eight team single
elimination affair, with all
member NCAA schools eligible
to participate.

To qualify, a school must
play at least 6 NCAA opponents
and show a strong
representative schedule. Only
the won-loss record against
NCAA opponents will be considered.

The eight schools will all be
selected at large using the 8
NCAA districts as a basis. One
team each will come from Districts
1(New England), 2(NY,
PA., NJ, Del., W.Va.), 3(Md.,
Va., and most of the South),
and 4-8 (the rest of the
country). There will be two
at-large berths, from any district,
and one other strong
team form Districts 1-2 and
also Districts 3-8.

A committee will select and
seed the teams for four
first-round games to be played
by May 22, the sites to be
determined. The second round
will be a week later, and the
finals will be June 5, 1970, at
Hofstra stadium on Long Island.

Virginia, defending national
tri-champion, will have its
hands full to make the playoffs
since District 3 includes perennial
national powers Johns
Hopkins, Navy, and Maryland.
