Damp Harriers Down Old Dominion

By Mike DeCamps
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

Neither rain nor cold could
do much to stop the Cavalier
cross-country squad from
finishing their dual meet season
Friday as the harriers swamped
Old Dominion 23-38. Running
in the midst of one of
Virginia's annual monsoons did
not do much to make the
running easy, but the victory
was satisfying enough.

Meyer Sets Record

The Old Dominion course
was a flat 5.4 miles of roads, so
the slipping and sliding was cut
to a minimum and a new
course record was established.
Phil Meyer, looking back in
shape again after a two week
fling with the flu, established
the new record at 27:47.

Meyer's time eclipsed the
old record of 29:11 held by
University of Richmond ace
Fred Guest. In all five runners
snapped the record. Old
Dominion's only two front
runners Ron Logan and Ron
Erwin finished two-three
respectively and also blitzed
the old record.

But after these two came in,
Virginia scored with a pack of
eight dripping runners led by
Joe Cacciapaglia, fourth, and
Jim Wood, fifth. Captain Frank
Andrew was sixth and Brew
Barron was Virginia's last
scoring runner at seventh.

No Improvement

The final dual meet record
is 3-4, rather disappointing in
that the Cavaliers could not
improve on last year's record.
But the big two meets are yet
to come, the State being
Friday and the Conference
Monday.

The state meet at William
and Mary gives the Cavaliers a
change to shoot at Tech again.
William and Mary is almost a
conceded winner. The Indians
should be a real threat in the
nationals this year.

Conference Outlook

Monday at Chapel Hill the
Cavaliers will look to a fourth
place finish equalling last year's
fine ending. Maryland and
Duke are the conference
powerhouses and North
Carolina State has three
outstanding winners.
