McCauley Paces UNC Attack,
Shoots For Fifteen Records

By Jim Wilson

When Virginia's football team
rolls into Chapel Hill this Saturday
to face the Tar Heels and their
Homecoming crowd, they will run
into a tough North Carolina squad
and their record challenging
halfback, Don McCauley.
McCauley, a six-foot, 211 pound
senior from Garden City, New
York, has an extremely good
chance of breaking six ACC and
nine Carolina school records in his
four remaining games.

Player Of Year

Last year McCauley rushed for
1,092 yards, a Carolina record, and
was the ACC Player of the Year.
With four games remaining nothing
short of an injury will stop him
from smashing his rushing record
and the remaining endangered
fourteen.

Three of the ACC records are
held by Virginia's all time great
halfback, Frank Quayle. McCauley,
who comes from the same high
school as Quayle, has been
averaging 140.7 yards per game,
while Quayle (1968) averaged 121
for the season. For this season
McCauley's rushing total is only
228 yards or two off games, behind
Quayle's ACC record of 1,213
yards. The Tar Heel stalwart also
only needs 173 yards to eclipse
Quayle's career rushing record of
2,695 yards.

McCauley also is close to
breaking three other ACC records
and nine team records. Among the
jeopardized records are two ACC
rushing records and the season
touchdown record. Of these the
season rushing total record is
destined to fall.
record and touchdowns per season
appear slightly out of reach for
McCauley would have to score eight
TD's and carry the ball four more
times a game.

Three UNC Records

The North Carolina records,
three of which are McCauley's
already, are all easily within his
grasp for they will fall before the
ACC ones do since they overlap in
rushing, points and touchdowns.

Tar Heel No. 23

For those who make the trip to
Chapel Hill this weekend look for
(or look out for) Tar Heel No. 23.
It will be easy to spot him when he
runs and punts. To win the game
the Cavaliers will have to contain
