Tar Heels, Gamecocks Win,
Other Conference Teams Fall
ACC teams again found the
going tough outside of the
conference last weekend, as they
won only two of six
non-conference contests.
North Carolina and South
Carolina were the only successful
teams, as the undefeated Tar Heels
knocked off Vanderbilt, 10-7, and
the Gamecocks topped winless
Virginia Tech, 24-7.
North Carolina had to come
from behind to top Vanderbilt, as
all 10 UNC points came in the final
period, after Vandy took an early
lead. A 16-yard scoring pass from
John Swofford to Lewis Jolley, and
Ken Craven's 18-yard field goal
provided the winning points for the
Tar Heels, ranked nineteenth in the
country, after they failed to score
on five opportunities in the first
half.
South Carolina got 17 points in
the third quarter to break a
halftime tie and run away from the
Gobblers. Reserve quarterback
Jackie Young led the second half
assault, after regular Tommy Suggs
re-injured his ankle at the end of
the first half. Young led the
Gamecocks to 445 yards in total
offense.
Duke gave top-ranked Ohio
State a good game for a half, before
Rex Kern passed for one TD and
ran for another in the second half
to lead the Buckeyes to a 34-10
win. David Pugh's first quarter field
goal gave the Devils an early 3-0
lead, but Ohio State came back to
lead 6-3 at the half. Leo Hart was
ineffective for most of the game,
and reserve Dennis Satyshur led the
Blue Devils to their only TD, which
came late in the game on an
80-yard drive.
Winless N.C. State gave Florida a
tough fight before bowing 14-6.
The Wolfpack intercepted John
Reaves twice, and defensed the
highly touted Florida quarterback
fairly well as he completed only 21
of 52 passes. Florida, however,
picked off seven Wolfpack passes,
and got a good performance from
Tommy Durrance, who scored one
touchdown and threw for another.
N.C. State didn't score until the
game's last minute.
Brent Cunningham ran for 217
yards on 16 carries to lead Georgia
Tech to a 28-7 win over Clemson.
Clemson led 7-0 at the half until
reserve quarterback Jack Williams
led Georgia Tech to three second
half TDs.
Maryland stayed winless by
dropping an 18-11 decision to
Miami (Fla.) Friday night. The
Terps dropped behind 8-0 when
they fumbled twice inside their
own 10 in the first half. Bob
Tucker scored the Maryland TD on
a 21-yard run late in the game, after
the Terps got three points on Gary
Fries' 30-yard field goal.
VMI, the Wahoos' next
opponents, were stomped by
Boston College 56-3.
