Booters Set To Defend Title

Virginia's varsity soccer team
shut out Lynchburg College, 3-0, in
a scrimmage last Sunday afternoon.
The reigning ACC champions were
led by John Gaughen, who scored
twice, and Fred McGlynn, who
tallied once via a penalty kick.
Assists on Gaughen's goals came
from Jay Connor and Sam Crosby.

Coach Richard Lewis, although
hesitant to be overly optimistic
after only two weeks of practice,
that the booters are playing
better soccer now than they were a
year ago at this time. Mr. Lewis is
particularly pleased that last year's
formidable team spirit has carried
over to this year's squad.

General Manager Gordon Burris
was impressed with the team's
competitive debut. Mr. Burris
pointed out the strong Cavalier
defense, stressing the fullback line
of Ed Marks, Chip Williams, and
Jim Glazer.

Sunday's scrimmage was the
first and last one before October 1,
when Virginia opens the season at
VMI.
