Baseballers Lose Twice

Virginia's baseballers
dropped out of contention for
the ACC crown yesterday as
they dropped both ends of a
disappointing doubleheader to
Maryland at Lambeth Field.

The Terps came from
behind, scoring runs in each of
the last three innings, to win
the opener 5-3 in extra innings.

Virginia jumped to a 2-1
lead in the bottom of the first,
after Maryland scored a single
run in the top of the inning.
Lead-off hitter Terry Dan
walked, moved to third on
infield grounders, and scored
on Mike Cubbage's single. Dave
Bratt then doubled to
left-center to score Cubbage.

The Cavaliers scored again
in the third when Steve Bryant
led off with a triple, and scored
on Sam Beale's two-out single.

Maryland picked up one run
in the sixth inning of the
seven-inning game, which was
shortened because of the
doubleheader. James Morris
tripled and scored on Dave
Sauve's sacrifice fly. Only a
diving catch of Joe Shamburg's
drive to right with two out by
Terry Dan saved the Cavaliers
from giving up a second run.

Maryland tied the game in
the seventh when Jimmy
Lawrence singled up the
middle, got to third on infield
grounders, and scored on
winning pitcher Randy Kurtz'
single to right.

Virginia threatened in the
eighth, but Kurtz got Bratt on
a called third strike with two
outs. A home run by Gene
Hiser with one on in the top of
the eighth put the first of the
twin bill away for the Terps.

Hunter Hollar was the
losing pitcher for the Cavaliers.

Maryland also took the
second game, 7-4. Virginia
took the lead in the first as
outfielder Dan led off with a
home run blast into the hedge
in left. Bill Hall followed with
a line drive double into the
right field corner but was
caught off the bag by Hiser's
great throw.

Aroused into action,
Maryland, currently third in
the ACC, erupted for three
markers in the second on a
walk and three straight hits.
Dan whalloped another solo
shot to open the third inning
for the Cavs but the Terps'
John Petronaci, who received
credit for the win, choked off
the rally, stranding Bryant,
who had doubled.

Struggling back from a one
run deficit, the Cavaliers scored
a two-out run in the bottom of
the fifth on an infield single by
Bryant which scored starting
pitcher Ed Kihm, who had
helped his own cause with a
long double into the alley in
left center.

In the sixth, Maryland
jumped on tired Kihm with
two quick singles before pinch
hitter Randy Kurtz garnered
his second safety of the
afternoon, a triple which drove
in two runs. A hit batsman and
a stolen base set up the next
two Terp scores on Mike
Baier's single.

Virginia pushed across
another run in the bottom of
the sixth as a pair of fielder's
choices put Bratt, who had
opened the frame with a single,
into scoring position. Pinch
hitter Charlie Williams
delivered a sharp single to
right, moving Bratt across the
plate.

Georgetown comes to
Lambeth Field to face the
Cavaliers in a non-conference
game at 2 p.m. today.
