Phi Gam Takes Title,
PiKa, Lefevre Edged

Fate continued to play its
leading role in IM basketball
competition by denying Sigma Nu,
PiKA and Lefevre dorm their
respective championships last night
at Memorial Gym.

In the night's most important
game Sigma Nu was edged 50-49.
The game was up for grabs until
Steve Kinnelly dropped both ends of
a one and one through the basket
with ten seconds left.

Controlling the tap Sigma Nu
started the game off by running off
four quick points before Phi Gam's
Bill Buck connected with the first
of his 21 points. The game then
swayed back forth until Buck's
fourteen points gave Gam a 27-25
half-time lead.

Switching to a man-to-man
defense in the second half Phi Gam
quickly padded their lead to seven
points only to see it dwindle to a
mere point, mainly due to the
timely shooting of George Yeonas.
The lead then switched hands
numerous times until fate cast its
shadow of defeat on Sigma Nu by
having Kinnelly fouled with just
thirty seconds remaining. After
sinking the foul shots Sigma Nu had
but ten seconds to score three
points for the victory.

In the consolation game Zete
pulled a major upset by defeating
PiKA 54-53. PiKA, led by its fast
break, completely dominated the
first half and at one time held a
22-10 lead. Zete, however, would
not fold and managed to fight to
within ten at the half.

In the second half Zete
displayed some of the finest
shooting Memorial Gym has seen in
recent years and with 1:23
remaining only two points
separated the two teams. Once
again fate's presence was felt as a
usually stable PiKA five committed
four turnovers in the last minute.

In the dorm championship a
major upset occurred when Lefevre
was beaten by Balz 37-31, a team
they had beaten by 14 earlier in the
season. Bill Troup and Bill Cross led
the losers with 13 points apiece
while Baltz was led by the
rebounding of Norm Brown and the
scoring of Bill Brittain.
