BASKETBALL

Norman Sloane's selection as
ACC Coach of the Year makes it
three such honors for the Wolfpack
coach, all from different
conferences. He won it in the
Southern Conference at The Citadel
in 1957, at Florida in 1961 while in
the Southeastern Conference, and
with his fourth Wolfpack team this
year in the ACC...When State
became the first team to score 100
points in South Carolina's Carolina
Coliseum, it marked the eighth time
this season that the Wolfpack had
scored over 100 points, tying the
school mark established by the
1955 team...The 23 wins makes it
14 times States had attained 20 or
more victories in a season and it
was the most victories since the
1956 team won 24 games...Since
Everett Case revitalized basketball
at State and in the South, State has
been the regular season champion
ten times, winning the old Southern
and ACC tournaments, on nine of
the occasions...State, with its sixth
ACC title, has captured the
tournament three of the five times
the regular season winner did not
defend its honor in the tournament.

SPORTS WHEELS

Rain forced postponement
Thursday of the first day of
qualifying for Sunday's Atlanta 500
stock car race. Despite the
continued wet weather forecast, a
few stolid fans, hoping to catch a
glimpse of their heroes, moped
around the stands in parkas
listening to Johnny Cash records
piped over the PA system. The only
stock car sounds originated from
the open garages in the infield
where four-time winner Cale
Yarborough, in a black cowboy hat,
and Carolina 500 winner Richard
Petty, were seen.

had 2,045.

In his final game. Scott passed
Larry Miller, who compiled a total
of 1,982. Scott's scoring average in
his senior year was 27.1.
