Ruggers Host Baltimore,
Washington Before Trip
By Winston Wood
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer
After three weeks of practice
Virginia's Rugby Club will open its
spring schedule this Saturday
against Baltimore here on Nameless
Field.
The Cavalier ruggers will take to
the field at two for the first of two
games that afternoon. Washington
& Lee's "A" team will face
Virginia's B squad at 3:30. Led by
club president Terry Daniels and
field captain Byron Shankman, the
club will play one more game here
in Charlottesville before leaving for
England on March 20th. That game
will be played against Washington
on March 14th, in a rematch of the
fall game which Virginia lost by 2
points in D.C.
This spring's team will feature
the same fast aggressive scrum that
has made the Cavaliers one of the
most successful rugby teams in the
country. Not only is the scrum
outstanding but also the backfield,
a perennial sore spot, will be
strengthened by the return of
Courtney Hoopes, who was out of
school last semester.
Also returning from semi-retirement
are back Dickie Payne and
scrummer Jay Dagliesh.
New faces that have appeared
during practices are ex-football
players Peter Schmidt who played
well in last week's
scrimmage, and
Boyd Page.
An inter-squad scrimmage was
held this past Sunday on Carr's Hill
Field in which six teams took part.
This was the largest number ever to
attend a Rugby Club practice and it
is expected that such enthusiasm
will continue throughout the season.
The trip to England will be the
high point of the year, and those
who will make the trip will be
picked by a team selection committee
of five players. Selections will
be made based on performances in
this week's matches. Thirty-four
players will make the trip accompanied
by some 20 others, including
such notables as Cavalier
Daily editor Robert Cullen, Student
Council President Jim Rocbuck,
and Charlottesville's own Lucius
Beebe, local bon vivant John Tuck.
To raise funds for new uniforms
the club will hold a buffet next
Monday evening at the Library
Restaurant, $3 a ticket for dinner,
beer, and rugby films.
