Cavaliers Engage Terps
For Sixth Place Berth

Bill Gibson's no longer hapless
Cavaliers will endeavor to stretch
two winning streaks Saturday. One,
they will seek to conquer Maryland
for the fifth consecutive time and,
two, they will strive to win their
fourth straight ACC game.

The task is not easy. Lefty
Driesell, in his initial year at the
Maryland helm, was insulted by the
supposedly luckless Cavaliers in
their last meeting when Virginia
eked out its first ACC win, 71-69,
at U Hall. Since that time Virginia
has chalked up two more upsets,
losing only in overtime to George
Washington - an early season 92-71
Maryland victim. Conversely,
Drissell's Terps have since dropped
three contests, emerging the victor
only once in a 103-85 triumph over
Clemson.

The prime kudos for the game
Saturday is a sixth place finish in
the ACC standings, an all-important
ranking for the upcoming tourney.
There is also added incentive for
the home-standing Terps a
victory would give the 12-12 Terps
their first winning season since
1965-66. Virginia has already won
more games than anyone thought
possible, but win number ten would
be nice. With the present standings
it would pair N.C. State with
Virginia in the opening round, a
team the Cavaliers have played
extremely well against twice.

Coach Gibson will undoubtedly
go to his "four sophs plus one"
lineup so successful against Duke,
sometime Saturday but the starting,
five will be altered. Team leader
Chip Case will return to the lineup,
but a severe charley horse in Case's
thigh might allow Frank DeWitt a
chance to play. Chip Miller is the
probable replacement for Kevin
Kennelly, still suffering from an
injured elbow. Tim Rash, hoping to
improve on his outstanding effort
in the Duke game, will again team
with Miller in the backcourt. Bill
Gerry, mainstay along with case in
Virginia's surge to the top of the
ACC's second division, and Scott
McCandlish fill out the starting five.

Will Hetzed, Rod Horst and
Sparky Still will lead the Maryland
contingent against Virginia. Hetzel
recently became the Terps' number
two all-time scorer and boasts a
16.1 scoring average. But Rod
Horst, topping 20 points in each of
his last four games, has taken over
the Terp scoring leadership with a
16.3 average. Having yet to foul
out, Horst has hit an excellent .525
per cent from the floor while
grabbing nearly ten rebounds a
game. Still, a sophomore, has tallied
64 points in the last three games,
including a career high 29 against
Clemson.

Prior to the varsity contest the
Virginia and Maryland frosh hold
their finale. The Baby Terps are led
by Virginia's Most Valuable Player
last season in high school, Jim
O'Brien. In 14 games the gangly,
6-8 redhead has hit on .495 per
cent of his shots for a 29.7 game
average. Backing O'Brien up from
the guard position is Howard White,
a gimpy-kneed all-star prospect
averaging 20.6 a game. Virginia
Coach Dick DiBiaso will counter
with the smooth working quintet of
Barry Parkhill, Jim Hobgood, Larry
Gerry, Jim Farmer and Jerry
Berman.
