Four Sign
Grants-in-aid
Four outstanding college football
prospects from the state of
Pennsylvania have signed athletic
grants to enter the University of
Virginia next fall according to head
coach George Blackburn.
In announcing the first athletes
to sign with Virginia from the
Quaker State, Blacksburg commented,
"We feel very fortunate to
have signed such outstanding athletes
from the state of Pennsylvania.
Our entire recruiting program
is beginning to take a solid form."
A 30-game starter, 5-11-pound
Steve Shawley received offers from
47 colleges. He performed for Bald
Eagle Area High School in Wingate
playing at offensive guard and defensive
tackle and led his team in
unassisted tackles with 81.
Two Big 33 picks, Craig Critchley
of Cedar Cliff High School in
Lemoyne and Ray Sweeney from
Bishop Egan in Philadelphia also
signed Cavalier grants.
From Heshaminy in Trevose,
rounding out the foursome, is 5-10,
198-pound tailback Steve Sebo.
Sebo sports a 4.7 40-yard speed
and All-Conference recognition
buzzer found the Tigers on the
short end of 93-80 at the hands
of the Virginia first-year men.
The Baby Cavs out hustled
and outshot their opponents,
hitting on 40 of 79 shots, while
Hampden-Sydney connected
on a little better than 30 per
cent of their shots. Barry
Parkhill spearheaded the
Virginia attack with twelve
assists, ten rebounds and 24
points. Parkhill passing more
and more in each game fed his
teammates and harassed his
opponents.
Larry Gerry was the third
starter to hit above the twenty
mark with 22 points along with
being tough under the boards,
pulling down seven rebounds.
Dick DiBiasio and his charges
in their last game of the season
take on the Baby Terps of
Maryland at College Park next
Saturday in the prevarsity
contest. After last night no
matter what the outcome, the
Cavayearlings are assured of a
winning season.
