Tigers On The Prowl;
Cagers Seek Eighth
In a battle of the have-nots,
Bill Gibson's cagers will play
host to Clemson tomorrow
night in University Hall at 8
o'clock.
Both teams find themselves
floundering with identical 1-9
conference records as the
1969-70 basketball season
moves into its final weeks.
With three games left until the
ACC Tournament on March 5
each squad is eager for the win,
thus establishing the other as
the worst the conference has to
offer. Coach Bobby Roberts, in
his final year at Clemson, has
been able to lead his team to
only one league win, over this
same Virginia team, clawing
them up to the tune of 104-87
down in Tigertown. The
Cavaliers have beaten only
Maryland, squeaking by them
71-69 here last Wednesday
night.
Lacking the services of third
year guard Kevin Kennelly,
Virginia could run into trouble,
even if the game is to be played
on friendly ground. The native
of Charlotte, North Carolina
bruised his elbow Tuesday
night in the loss to George
Washington, and he will ride
the bench until the
tournament. The play-maker
and one of the best
ball handlers on the squad,
Kennelly now ranks fourth in
the league in free throw
percentage with a .793 clip.
Taking up the slack for the
ailing Kennelly will probably
be Chip Miller, a second-year
man from Lexington, shooting
with a .333 percentage from
the floor. Another possible
lineup would have another
second-year - man, Frank
DeWitt, play for Kennelly
acting as a third forward
leaving only Captain Chip Case
and Tim Rash in the
backcourt. Case will be
appearing for the last time in U
Hall because of a conference
ruling allowing him a fifth year
of eligibility this season.
On defense the Cavaliers Dick DiBiaso's Charges Entertain Randolph-Macon Saturday
must somehow cope with
Clemson's high scoring guard,
the effusive Butch Zazalo
Hitting for an average 21.8
points a game, he leads the
Barry Parkhill Currently Leads Cavayearlings With 26.4 Average
with a .815 percentage.
Zazalo can be an explosive
scorer when in the mood as he
exhibited last week, pumping
in 38 points in a losing effort
against Wake Forest. Out of
the mood, however, he poses
less of a threat, once being held
to only four against South
Carolina.
Besides Mr. Wonderful, the
other four starters average in
double figures also: Greg Latin
above the others deserves the
most caution. He leads the
team in rebounding and trails
Zazalo for scoring honors.
