Yearlings Succumb To
Old Dominion, 95-79

By Bob Nigro

Caught flatfooted from the start
by a blistering Old Dominion frosh
fast break, the Cavayearlings never
really had a chance to get into the
ball game, as they fell to the ODC
Frosh 95-79. Led by great ball
handling and brilliant shooting of
Rick Nau, the Cavayearlings fell
down by as many as 19 points with
only 10 minutes gone in the first
half.

Despite the dismal beginning,
Coach Dick DiBso's boys never
threw in the sponge. Paced by
strong inside shooting by Barry
Parkhill and strong rebounding by
Jim Hobgood, the Cavayearlings
fought back to cut the ODC lead to
nine, 44-35, at halftime.

After halftime the surge
continued, and with 15:00 left on
the University Hall clock, the ODC
lead was cut to only five points on
a tip in by Parkhill.

But that was as close as they
were to get as again the tide turned
against Virginia. Barry Parkhill
picked up his fourth personal foul,
and the team was unable to get the
big basket when they needed it.
With 8:11 remaining the first-year
men slipped down to a 69-54
deficit.

At the buzzer tally hit 95-79
in favor of the ODC Frosh and the
Cavayearling record fell to 1-1 on
the season, while Old Dominion
leveled theirs at 2-2.

Na, 5-11 guard for ODC, led all
scorers with 37 points, most of
them coming on layups of the fast
break. Following for Virginia was
Barry Parkhill who got 25, despite
having to ride the bench a good
part of the second half with four
personals. Tom Hobgood swept the
boards 21 times to lead all
rebounders.

Now Coach DiBiaso is preparing
his charges for an encounter with
the North Carolina Tarheels'
heralded rookies. Last year the
Baby Heels took both games from
the Virginia Freshmen as they were
rated one of the top Freshman
teams in the nation. Coach DiBiaso
knows his team must be in best
form when the Tarheels invade
University Hall at 5:45 Tuesday
evening.
