John Merhtens Controls Ball As Booters Devastate N. C. State In Early Season Play

Cavaliers Trip Down Route 81 To Face Roanoke College For State Championship Today

After a discouraging loss to
Maryland yesterday in the
NCAA Southern Regional soccer
tournament, Gordon Butris'
Varsity booters must now
face Roanoke College for the
state championship. The game
will be played this afternoon in
Roanoke, at 2 p.m.

Not much is known about
the opponents. They have been
the state champions for the
past three years and stand
9-2-1 for the season. It is
known, however, that they got
very mad when Washington &
Lee received the invitation to
the NCAA small college tournament
that they themselves
expected. The last time a
Cavalier soccer team played a
Roanoke team, Virginia lost,
scoring the winning goal themselves.

Coming out of the Maryland
game in good shape physically the
Cavaliers suffered mostly bumps
and bruises. Mike Sorenson had
some leg cramps and Jay Conner
bruised his shin, but both will play
this afternoon.

Referring to the Maryland game,
Bordon Burris said "It was the best
three quarters we played all season."
The team didn't get the
needed breaks on offense and the
defense slowly ran out of gas.

Taking a gamble that didn't
work, Coach Burris substituted
mostly offensive players. Feeling
that such a move would be needed
to win the game, he made his five
replacements with those on the
forward line, hoping the tired
defense could hold their own.

With only a loss and a tie in
eleven games, Mr. Burris modestly
oozes confidence in his team. The
only squad in the ACC to de-throne
Maryland of their title in the last
sixteen years, they have only
allowed ten goals this season.
Things look bright for the future, as
the three leading scorers are second
and first year men. Fred McGlynn
leads the pack.

The defeat at College Park
Monday was a disappointment,
admitted the glib Mr. Burris, but he
was sure that there will not be a
letdown against Roanoke. After all,
the state championship hangs in the
balance.
