Ruggers Whip Spiders In Cold,
Face George Washington Saturday
By Bill Nachman
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer
Neither cold winds, numerous
injuries, nor poor officiating could
stop the Virginia Rugby Club from
winning two matches from the
University of Richmond Club Saturday
in the Capital city.
Taking to the pitch first, the
Virginia A squad downed Richmond
A, 8-3
Courtney Hoops, finally
deciding to rejoin the ranks of
championship caliber UVa., scored
a try with only ten minutes gone in
the contest. Breaking from the 50,
he ran to the 20 where he pop
kicked toward the goal, and outraced
several other players to the
ball for the score. Paul Bishop
converted.
Late in the half Virginia scored
again. Working the ball down the
line from a 15-yard loose scrum, fly
Henry Dudley passed outside to
Tom Furniss, who shovelled the
ball to outside center
Hoopes. Hoopes galloped in for
three.
Richmond put its only points of
the day on the board as time was
running out. A 10 yard try made
the halftime score, 8-3.
Neither side scored in the
second half. Virginia mounted
several sustained drives, but each
time some infraction would be
fabricated.
The final 8-3 tally does not
consider several Virginia injuries.
Tom Furniss played, but was
slowed considerably by a hamstring
pull. Scrummer Ralph Robertson
also played, despite the fact that he
is recovering from a severe groin
pull.
The Turques remained unbeaten
as they ripped Richmond, 21-3. It
was no contest from the start, as
Dickie Jordan ran in for three
before Richmond realized the
match had started. Mark Storm
converted.
Jordan scored again midway
through the half, with Storm
hitting another conversion. Virginia
B had a 10-0 halftime lead.
In the second half 11 points
were added to the Turque tally.
David Kravotil and Clay Ratterie
sparked play with tries which was
enough to thwart one late Richmond
score.
Standouts in the contest were
back Dickie Jordan, and hooker
Will O'Keefe who won every hook.
Next Saturday the A and C
teams travel to George Washington
(D.C.) The A squad is up against
one of the toughest sides in this
part of the country. GW's only loss
is to Old Blue of New York.
Perennially a nemesis to Virginia,
GW defeated the Washington Club
earlier in the season, and it was
Washington who dealt the Cavaliers
their only setback
