South Carolina Challenged For ACC Lead
Clemson Faces UNC; Duke, VPI Clash

With very little action within the
ACC this weekend, South Carolina
remains the only team with an
undefeated conference record, after
last Saturday's unexpected Duke
win over Clemson. Coach Paul
Dietzel's Gamecocks, beaten the
two weeks by non-league
rivals, can be assured of a tie for the
conference championship by beating
Wake Forest at Winston-Salem
in a series that has been continuous,
since 1938.

If Clemson should happen to
lose against North Carolina this
week then South Carolina will cop
their first ACC title regardless of
what happens when the two football
factories clash heads on the
final week of competition in
Columbia. The Tigers travel to
Chapel Hill for a must game with
the Tar Heels, who seem to get
better every week. The conferences'
two leading rushers, Don McCauley
and Ray Yauger will meet in what
shapes up to be the best league
game of the week.

In other games, Duke faces VPI
in Norfolk for the Oyster Bowl
(Oyster Bowl???), Maryland plays
Penn State (and to make it worse
they play at Penn State), N.C. State
hosts Houston, and if you didn't
know it already, the Virginia
Cavaliers shuffle off to New
Orleans, the fabled Sin City of the
South, to play Tulane.

After a two week lay off, N.C.
State's Wolfpack should have its
hands full with high scoring
Houston this week. The Cougars
average thirty eight points a game,
and have lost only two this year, to
Florida and Oklahoma State.

Fitful, inconsistent, inconstant
Maryland comes into their game
with Pen State with a 2-6 record.
The nationally-ranked Nittany
Lions have won seven in a row this
season and are looking for their
eighth. They have allowed only 72
points so far against such powers as
Syracuse, Kansas State, and West
Virginia.

Surprising everyone last week
against Clemson, the Duke offense
that was so heralded in the pre-season
finally proved itself. Against
VPI this weekend they should get
another chance, as they must face a
team that is pulling itself together
after a disastrous five game losing
streak. It will be the second straight
appearance for the Blue Devils in
Norfolk classic after edging Maryland
last year 30-28. Both teams
enter the game with identical 2-5-1
records.
