Duke Outlasts Upstart Tigers;
Tulane Dumps Georgia Tech

Duke's Leo Hart completed 17
of 27 passes to nail Frank Howard's
Clemson Tigers, 34-27. The
sensational quarterback managed to
score three times himself while
accumulating 258 yards total
offense.

Clemson scored first on a field
goal and a second period
touchdown, but the Blue Devils
stormed back with two tallies in the
second and fourth quarters.
Although penalized a whopping
201 yards, Duke intercepted
Clemson three times.

The Green Wave of Tulane,
Virginia's next foe, chalked up a
mild upset by tripping Georgia
Tech, 14-7. The Yellow Jackets
went minus six yards in the second
half, as Tulane quarterback Rusty
Lauchaussee set up the winning
score in the fourth period on passes
good for 20 and 28 yards.

Maryland fell behind to the
Miami of Ohio Redskins, 27-0, and
though mounting a comeback
effort, could not come up with the
win. Miami now stands 6-2 on the
season, while the Terps drop their
third in a row.

With just 5:40 left in the game,
Tennessee held a very slim lead,
16-14, over challenging South
Carolina. Vol quarterback Bobby
Scott Leed the game on the next UT
drive with a 40-yard scoring play to
Gary Kreis. George Hunt kicked
placements of 2, 37, and 20 yards
for the third ranked Volunteers.

A 51-yard field goal off the toe
of Grant Guthrie aided by a 30 mile
per hour breeze, allowed mighty
Florida State to gain a tie with
Virginia Tech. The stand-off in
Blacksburg fated the Hokies to
their first losing season since 1961.
