Wahoos, Seeking To End Two Game Losing Streak, Face North Carolina Saturday

Carolina hurries toward fair
Charlottesville Saturday, inspired
by a fired up 23-3 victory over
Wake Forest last weekend, in an
effort to jump on a bandwagon
vacated by North Carolina State
and Navy.

The Tar Heels are looking to
rambling halfback Don McCauley to
end a five year Virginia win streak.
At 6-0, 198 pounds, McCauley
threaded his way through the
Deacon defense for 188 yards in 25
attempts. The junior back also
managed 116 yards on a pair of
kick off returns.

North Carolina stands just 2-4
on the season, but there are many
in Chapel Hill contending that the
Heels have matured and will finish
strong. Carolina played well in
losing efforts to N.C. State (10-3)
and South Carolina (14-6) before
whipping Vanderbilt in the third
outing 38-22. Losses to Air Force
(20-10) and Florida (52-2) prefaced
last Saturday's break through
against Wake Forest.

Starting quarterback Johnny
Swofford, recovering from bruises
suffered against Florida several
weeks ago, will be back in action.
With Swofford and McCauley in the
backfield will be wing-back Bucky
Perry, a 5-9, 179 pound junior, and
fullback Sauley Zemaitis at 5-10,
192 pounds.

Paul Hoolahan leads the charge
on the line from his left tackle
position with his 5-11, 216 pound
size. Sam Bounds a 6-1, 220-pound
senior fills the opposite tackle spot.
Senior Ed Chelupka heads up the
right side blocking at guard, while
junior Keith Hicks stands above the
ball, with big Jim Hambaches (6-2,
230) manning the left guard spot.

Tony Blanchard at tight end,
and Rick Lanier from the split end
are favorite receivers of Tar Heels
aerials , especially a short patterns
to Blanchard on third down
situations.

The Tar Heel defense, seemingly
a little leaky, put it together last
week holding Wake to a lone field
goal. Carolina sports two
sophomores at the defensive ends;
Ben Berra (6-3, 183) on the left
side, and Judge Mattacks (6-4, 194)
opposite him.

Flip Ray bolsters the line tossing
his 6-3, 240-pound frame into the
tackle slot, with 6-1, 225-pound
Bud Grissom on the other side.

Carolina likes to throw up a six
man line on defense in a 6-2-3
alignment. At the defensive guards
will be Tom Cantrell (6-3, 227) and
Bill Richardson (6-0, 203). The Tar
Heels have been very successful
with their two sophomore
linebackers, Richy Packard and
John Bunting. Packard
distinguished himself with two pass
interceptions against Wake last
week.

Carolina place-kicker Don Hartig
has won the praise of many in
Carolina, and apparently with good
reason. He booted three field goals
against the Deacons, including a
47-yarder, and a record-breaking
kick of 48 yards.

For the Virginia Cavaliers this
game is a crucial one if the Wahoos
are to regain some early season
prowess. This Saturday's contest
marks the 74th celebration of this
southern rivalry, with Carolina
holding a slight 37-33-3 edge.
