Katz, Meyer Lead Harriers In 15-46 Smothering Of Keydets
In what Assistant Coach Holdin
termed "one of our best meets" the
Cavalier harriers picked up their
second win of the season with a
near perfect 15-46 ablution of VMI.
Captain Rick Katz and first-year
man Phil Meyer garnered the first
two berths as none of the Keydets
could place any higher than sixth.
Katz left the tightly knit group
of runners at the two miles mark
and was never challenged until near
the finish when Meyer closed the
time gap to seven seconds. Mayo
Tabb, Brew Burron and Jerry Hart
followed Meyer across the broken
tape for the 3-5 places.
The "greatly improved" effort
by the predominately young Cavaliers
lends hope to the Cavalier
cause in the upcoming conference
meet. Katz's time was just 45
seconds off the course record
established by William & Mary's
Howell Michael in the state meet
last year, and avid track fanatics
can easily remember Michael running
a 4:01 mile last spring. In
addition the first five Virginia
harriers wound up within 45
seconds of each other, a feat of
balance Coach Lon Onesty has been
"working on all season." The
conference meet will be held over
the five mile Charlottesville course
on November 10.
Virginia has two home meets
this weekend. On Friday the Terps
from Maryland invade town and,
though Maryland's scholarship runners
put them "out of everybody's
class," there should be some good
gutsy running. On Saturday the
Cavaliers take on Old Dominion
about noon.
