Whip Wake, 15-49
Katz Sets Record As Harriers Triumph
By Mike DeCamps
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer
Going from one extreme to another,
the Cavalier cross-country
squad, beaten soundly last weekend
by North Carolina and North Carolina
State, came back Friday afternoon
to clobber the Wake Forest
Demon Deacons, 15-49 at Winston-Salem.
Over a woody five and a quarter
mile course, six Cavalier runners
came in before the first tired Wake
Forest face was seen over the hill.
Heading the pack for the Virginia
harriers was captain Rick Katz.
Katz cased the first mile with
runner-up man Brew Barron right
beside him in 5:21. At the three
mile point, the two Cavalier stars
were still even at 16:45, but from
this point Katz moved away to win
in 29:02, which proved to be a
course record over the new Wake
Forest course.
Barron's second place clocking
was 29:52 which led third-place
Mayo Tabb by thirteen seconds,
fourth place Phil Meyer by twenty-five
seconds, and fifth-place Frank
Andrew by thirty-six seconds.
These time spreads indicated to
Coach Onesty that the team is beginning
to run much closer together
than it did in its first meet. This
depth will be greatly needed when
the Cavalier harriers come up
against much tougher Duke and
VPI in coming weeks. The Duke
meet this Friday will feature one of
the conference's outstanding runners,
Mike Graves.
On the whole, Coach Onesty felt
that "the Cavaliers' rugged workouts
are beginning to pay off in
dividends."
"We bounced back well from
the opening two losses, and now
should be much more ready for
Duke and VPI."
