gamecocks down state,
duke upsets deacons

Action abounded, though not
all of it pleasant, in the ACC
Saturday.

Maryland's Terrapins,
unsuccessfully trying to show
someone that they actually can win
two games in a row, lost a 20-9
contest to Syracuse Hounded by
an impotent offense, Maryland
could not capitalize on three
scoring opportunities resulting from
Syracuse fumbles. The 80 yards
netted rushing were a far cry from
the 354 yards gained in Maryland's
victory over Wake Forest the
previous week. Two bright spots in
Maryland's game were a tenacious
defense and a 90 yard pass play in
the fourth quarter, from substitute
quarterback Jeff Shugars to Roland
Merritt which pulled Maryland to
within four points of Syracuse with
3:53 to play in the last quarter.

Defeat also struck the Tar Heels
of North Carolina. They lost a close
20-10 contest to the Air Force
Academy. After leading 10-7 at the
half, North Carolina was unable to
score, while Air Force accumulated
13 points in the last quarter. After
Air Force scored on a 58 yard pass
play from Baxter to McGee, North
Carolina was able to plug up Air
Force's aerial game. But in the
fourth quarter, the Falcons were
able to sustain two scoring drives
on the ground which marked the
end of the game.

Even though Auburn was unable
to score in the first period, they
still defeated Howard's dark meat
from Clemson in a 51-0 contest. It
was Clemson's worst defeat in 25
years. Whatever Auburn was able to
do with their explosive offense,
Clemson was not, as Auburn
amassed 19 first downs and 358
total yards to Clemson's seven first
downs and 94 total yards. The 51
points raised Auburn's season point
total to 171 points in four games.

In a game between two ACC
teams, Duke finally won and Wake
Forest went down for the second
week in a row. Leo Hart passed for
262 yards, completing 21 of 28
passes, as Duke won 27-20.
