Continuing its winning ways, the
Virginia Rugby Club won three
matches Sunday afternoon against
teams from Maryland and Lynchburg.
The highlight of the day was
the 51-0 shelling of Lynchburg by
the Turques, the Cavalier B team's
self-styled title.

Maryland was a last minute
opponent for the A team. The A
squad was to have faced Norfolk,
but the change in opposition did
not keep them from winning, 19-0.

Virginia was first on the scoreboard
with Sam Robinson following
Allie Duckworth's dummy pass
into the try zone for three. A few
minutes later Byron Shankman
scored a try from close in after the
ball had been passed beautifully
down the field from a line-in on the
50.

The highlight of the game was
Allie Duckworth's 40 yard drop
kick attempt. Though it hit the
uprights, Ed McGuire rebounded it
for a try. Late in the half Tom
Furniss connected on a 20 yard
penalty kick. Furniss also made
good on two conversions. Virginia
led 16-0 at the half.

Second half play was inconsistent
as several scoring opportunities
were thwarted for each side. Early
in the period Tom Furniss slithered
loose for a 20 yard try which closed
out the scoring and gave Virginia a
19-0 victory.

The Turques simply demolished
an inexperienced Lynchburg side,
51-0. The B squad scored almost at
will from the time Ham Myers
made a try with only a few minutes
elapsed in the match. Eleven
different ruggers scored in the
fracas. Scrummer Will O'Keefe
shone for the Turques with a very
fine all-around performance. The
51 points scored by the Turques set
the Club scoring mark.

Virginia's C team upended
another Lynchburg squad, 13-6, in
the day's warm-up. The victory was
spearheaded by the fine play of the
backs and a spirited effort from the
scrum.

David Levy gave the Cavaliers an
early lead as he evaded several
defenders to score a 40 yard try.
Downing Smith hit on the conversion.
During the closing seconds of
the half Lynchburg scored a try.

Displaying superb teamwork.
Ron Pulliam did several nice passes
in hooking up on a 40 yard scoring
play. David Levy converted.
Lynchburg tightened things up with
a try, but Larry Gibson iced the
contest for the Cavaliers with a try
to give them a 13-6 win.

Friday afternoon the B team
traveled to Lexington to hand the
Washington and Lee squad a 15-6

setback. Things were even through
the first half, but then Virginia
began to dominate play.

This coming Sunday the ruggers
journey to Washington, D.C. to
tangle with the Washington Rugby
Club. Three matches will be held
allowing the A.B. and C squads to
all get into the action.
