cavavayearlings rout terps, 27-10
Friday afternoon, the Virginia
Cavayearlings registered their first
victory of the season as the first
year offense erupted for twenty
points in the fourth quarter to
defeat the Baby Terps of Maryland,
27-10.
On the first play of the final
period, quarterback Bill Troup
started the fireworks with a 31 yard
touchdown pass to flanker Alan
Clements, giving Virginia a 14-10
lead. Then with five minutes left in
the ball game, halfback Fred
Kaspick broke loose for his second
touchdown of the game, a 52 yard
run which virtually put the game
out of reach for Maryland. Rick
Babula, who replaced starting
quarterback Troup finished the
scoring with a 13 yard keeper.
The only Maryland touchdown
came in the third period when
defensive end Don Ratliff covered a
blocked Cavayearling punt in the
endzone. Ratliffe's recovery
complemented a 28 yard field goal
by Maryland place kicker Lathrop
to give the Terps a 10-7 lead going
into the fourth quarter. Kaspick's
first touchdown run of 22 yards
had been all the offense the
first-year men could muster up to
that point.
Virginia thoroughly dominated
the statistics. The Cavayearlings led
the Baby Terps in first downs, 16-7,
yards rushing 131-109, and passing
151- only four for Maryland.
Virginia quarterbacks completed
ten of 16 passes, a considerable
improvement over Bill Troup's
performance in the scoreless tie
against Virginia Tech last weekend.
In the first two games of the
season the Cavayearling defenders
have forbidden their opponents'
offensive teams to cross the
Cavayearling goal. Maryland had
three passes intercepted and two
fumbles lost, one of which Virginia
tackle George Jacoby covered at
the Maryland 19 yard line to set up
the final score by Rick Babula.
The gallant defenders will try
their hardest to keep their scoreless
string intact when the Tar Babies of
North Carolina invade Scott
Stadium this Friday afternoon.
