Wake Upsets VPI, SC, State Win

Wake Forest's 16-10 upset of
Virginia Tech highlighted
Saturday's ACC schedule which
featured two intra-conference
games and two contests with
outsiders. The Deacons came
back from a ten point deficit in the
opening quarter to overtake the
Hokies on Buzz Leavitt's 27-yard

early lead on a one-yard touchdown
run by Terry Smoot and a 41-yard
field goal by Jack Simcsak, but
then stalled offensively. South
Carolina remained unbeaten with a
14-6 win over North Carolina. The
Gamecocks were stopped cold on
offense in the first half, crossing the
50 yard line only once, but came
back after halftime to score twice
in the third quarter on Warren
Muir's six yard run and a 27 yard
pass from Tommy Suggs to Fred
Zeigler. North Carolina managed
only two field goals.

Clemson found the going rough
in the Southeastern Conference as
Georgia romped over the Tigers
30-0. Quarterback Mike Cavan
passed for two scores and ran for
one to lead Georgia. Clemson's tone
serious threat was stopped by an
interception at the Georgia 14 late
in the game.

N. C. State defeated Maryland
24-7 as State turned two
interceptions and a fumble into
scores after Maryland had taken an
early 7-o lead. Leon Mason scored
State's final touchdown on a 74
yard run. William and Mary, the
Wahoos next opponent, beat
Temple 7-6 as the Indians thwarted
a two-point conversion try late in
the final quarter to even their
record at 1-1. W&M's only score
came on a 26-yard run by Joe Pilch
in the second quarter. Jim Daniel's
extra point proved to be the
winning margin. John Small scored
from the one with 1:4o left.

Richmond star end Walker
Gillette double covered by
the VMI secondary, could manage
only one catch against the Keydets,
but it went for 65 yards and a
touchdown which broke a scoreless
tie in the third quarter and sparked
Richmond to a 20-0 win.
Richmond got two more scores in
the fourth quarter on an
interception return by Jeff Hanson
and a 14-yard run by Jerry
Mauro. Tulane fell to West
Virginia 35-17 as tailback Bob
Gresham ran for 169 yards and two
touchdowns to lead the
Mountaineers, who trailed 10-7
early in the game before exploding
in the second half.

Navy almost upset Boston
College before a late BC surge
snuffed their hopes. Quarterback
Frank Harris threw for two
touchdowns in the fourth quarter
to erase Navy's 14-7 lead and send
the Middies to their second straight
loss.
