Progress Report

Defense Challenged

In the weekly football progress
report, defensive coordinator Don
Lawrence reviewed the Wahoo's
defensive performance against
Clemson and explained the preparations
the Cavaliers are making for
their Homecoming game with the
Duke Blue Devils Saturday.

According to Coach Lawrence,
the team was "extremely disappointed"
with their loss last Saturday.
"The staff felt that the boys
had worked hard for the 2-3 days
before the game and were prepared."

In that contest the Clemson
Tigers committed some mistakes
which should have proven costly,
but they emerged from these jams
virtually unscathed. Lawrence referred
to this in his report by
commenting, "We had numerous
opportunities defensively and
offensively but could not take advantage
of them." He went on to cite
the outstanding defensive play of
tackles Randy Lestik and Andy
Selfridge.

When the Wahoos face Duke
Saturday, they must contend with
the high-powered Blue Devil offense
led by All-ACC candidate Leo
Hart.-Hart broke several conference
passing records last fall as a
sophomore. Praising Hart's passing
ability, Lawrence remarked, "There
is no way to stop him if he has time
to throw."

In summing up the Blue Devils,
he called Duke "the finest offensive
team we are going to face this
year." In order to emerge victorious
in Saturday's contest, Lawrence
emphasized that the Cavaliers
would have to "put everything
together defensively and offensively."
