Progress Report
Lawrence On Defense
Defense is the name of the game
and the Cavalier Defensive coordinator
Don Lawrence says that
the Wahoo defensive unit is ready
both mentally and physically.
Going with a strong, well-balanced
attack, the Clemson Tigers
will be hard to stop; but the
Cavaliers boast a strong secondary
and a first rate line. Mr. Lawrence
states that the Wahoos will have to
play straight defenses with very
little fancy tactics.
The men up front will have to
contain Coach Howard's fine running
attack spearheaded by Ray
Yauger and Jack Anderson. The
Cavalier defensive secondary, which
is thought to be the best in years,
with Peter Schmidt, Bob Rannigan,
and Paul Reid, will have to keep an
Charlie Waters.
All in all, Coach Lawrence sums
up his unit: "Our run-defense needs
improvement. We have some young
fellows in the middle, and we have
to improve our tackling. Overall the
defense looks real good." Besides
inexperience in the line, the
Wahoos have injuries reported on
both defensive ends. Tom Patton
has a weak knee which has held up
so far but may prove to be a
question mark under game conditions,
and Al Sinesky is troubled
with a sore shoulder.
All this week, the Wahoos have
been working hard trying to prepare
an adequate defensive for the
Tigers. Practices have been long and
hot, but spirit is high as the
Cavaliers ready themselves for their
opening battle.
