Minimum $35,000 Grid Gate
Set At Conference Meeting
A main matter of business on
the agenda of the recent ACC
meeting in Greensboro was the
Conference decision to stipulate
that 35,000 dollars be the minimum
gate receipt for the visiting
team at an ACC football game.
Although the previous figure on
"away game" gate receipts was just
25,000 dollars, seven of the eight
member schools voted for the
substantial 10,000 dollar increase.
Virginia, who plays four of five of
her ACC contests in Scott Stadium,
was the only conference school to
cast a vote in opposition to the
35,000 dollar stipulation.
The Cavaliers have but rarely
been able to fill the stadium to the
extent that the Athletic Department
could present the visiting
team with a 35,000 dollar check.
Mr. Sebo indicated that only
through increased season ticket
sales could the Athletic Department
hope to make up for the expected
gate losses implicit in the 35,000
dollar stipulation.
In other business acted upon at
the ACC meeting, new clarification
of the scholarship rules was issued.
Although no school may donate
more than 35 grants-in-aid in one
year, ACC members are allowed
175 athletes on scholarship in the
school at one time.
An additional policy set by the
ACC governing board concerns
procedure on the televising of
conference basketball games. It was
decided that each team in the
conference must be represented at
least once during the season in the
weekly ACC telecasts. The new tube policy also requires that at
least once every other season
the broadcast must originate from
the home court of each member
school. A new blackout ruling will
be adhered to in the coming year;
the blacked-out area to include
both the site of the televised game
and also the site of any additional
ACC contests on that date.
