ACC Champions Face Generals

After completing wins over
UNC, Duke, and Maryland to take
the ACC championship, the
Cavaliers bow out of collegiate
competition this afternoon at 3:30
on University Hall Field.
Opposition will be provided by
Washington and Lee's Generals.

The Generals are somewhat of
an unknown quantity, usually sticking
to the smaller colleges on their
lacrosse schedule. Jay Meriwether
has been supplying the spark for
their midfield while freshman Scott
Neese does the same for the
midfield.

Having finished the bulk of their
season and met the most formidable
of the lacrosse powers, Coach
Beardmore's stickmen sport a 6-2
record. The first loss came to Johns
Hopkins who still remain atop the
national rankings after their past
weekend loss to Navy. The Midshipmen
beat the Cavaliers a few weeks
ago by a scant point, and Navy has
two collegiate losses.

Virginia's co-captains have been
having good years.

Defenseman Pete Coy, a first
team All-American pick last year,
has lead the Cavalier three to allow
the lowest average of goals per
game in the Mid-Eastern Division.
Doug Hilbert and Al Kavasch, the
other two members of the unit, are
much of the reason for the low
mark.

Coy is also near the top of the
list for the Cavaliers in captured
ground balls, having collected 60.

Jim Potter, the other co-captain,
has proved himself to be an
all-around stickman. Playing on the
first midfield, Potter leads Virginia
in ground balls with 70. He has also
been alternating with Tad Joerdans
on the face-off duties and has
proven himself to be strong and
aggressive.

When it comes to scoring, Potter
is the number one middle in that
department. He has nine goals and
nine assists.

Jim Eustace is another reason
why the defense has allowed so few
goals. This small goalie has 87 saves
for eight games while allowing only
5.1 goals per game. Many of his
stops included point blank shots.
His clearing tactics have been
fautless, and he has collected 33
ground balls.

The Virginia attack has been
adequate. Third-year man Charlie
Rullman has the most goals for the
Cavaliers, totalling 13 with seven
assists, while first-year man Jay
Connor leads the team in points. He
has 11 goals and 12 assists.

There are many others to whom
credit is due. Chuck Edwards,
Sandy Archibald, Steve Nauss, Tad
Joerdans, Pete Kirk, Bob Proutt,

and Pete Eldredge round out the
midfields which give Virginia the
depth it needs.

First-year man Doug Tarring
gives a lot of help on the attack.

After today's contest with W&L
there will be one more game here
this Saturday against the powerful
Carling Lacrosse Club.
