Spiders Fall, 99-46

Trackmen Whip Spiders

With the brightest hopes for the
future any Virginia track team has
shown in years, the Cavalier thinclads
closed out their dual meet
season yesterday afternoon by
avenging last year's loss to Richmond,
and trouncing the Spiders,
99-46.

Although the meet marked Mike
Harvey's last appearance at Lambeth
Field in a Cavalier uniform,
next year's team will look to a host
of returning quarter-milers and
distance men.

For Harvey, his last home
performance at Lambeth Field was
a long one. With pulled ligaments in
his legs, the Cavalier captain had to
settle for second in the long jump.
Second year-man Jim Shannon won
the event with a leap of 21-2. Later
in the afternoon, Harvey came back
to take the triple jump at 44-6.

Virginia continued its strong
showing in the field events, taking
six of them. Mike Wilkes was the
only double winner yesterday afternoon.
He went 142 feet in the
discus and 192 feet in the javelin.

Al Sinesky was another successful
weight man for the Cavaliers as
he won the shot with a 50-3 toss.

Virginia was also bolstered by
the performances of John Morris,
who had been out of action for the
past month with an injury.

He managed a third in the 100
yard dash, a second in the 220 yard
dash and ran a leg on the winning
440 relay team and mile relay team.

The 2 mile run was a highlight
for Coach Onesty's squad. The
Cavaliers swept the event with Rick
Katz first, Drew Barron second, and
first year-man Greg Lane third.

The Spiders did have one outstanding
individual performer. He is
Carl Wood from Richmond. The
tall, lanky but muscular athlete
took a second in the shot put while
tying George Hawkins in the high
jump at 6 feet.

When the running events came
around, Wood moved over to the
track to win the 120 yard high

hurdles and immediately after ran
the 440 yard dash in a very quick
48.9. By this time the discus results
were in and he had won third place
there.

A couple of first-year men, Greg
Lane and Dick Morris, turned in
some good runs. Lane captured the
mile in 4:23.6, his best to date, and
Morris took a second in the 440
yard dash, behind Wood, and then
teamed up with his brother John to
help Virginia win the mile relay
with a quick 3:22 clocking.

Next year's co-captains have
been selected. Shot putter Al
Sinesky and distance man Rick
Katz have won the honors.
