Scrummers Take Two;
Finish Third In Tourney

By Mike Blumm
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

Virginia had to settle for third
place in the Richmond Tournament
held over the past weekend,
Richmond captured the
championship by defeating
Washington 11-8 in a closely
contested match that wasn't
decided until the final minutes.

Richmond was led by former
Virginia rugger, Bob Gilmer, who
scored a try and set up the other
two with some deft passes In the
tournament's opening match,
Richmond, whose only previous
loss in 11 matches was to our
Wahoos, trounced Duke 24-0.
Virginia faced Washington in the
afternoon's second match. It was a
merciless, bruising affair, and play
was continually being halted
because of injuries suffered in some
of the most fierce tackling since
Chuck Bednarick hung up his
spikes. At the game's end, however,
Washington prevailed, 11-6.

Virginia opened the scoring
when Tom Furniss, better known as
"Tom Slick and his electric drop
kick," dropped a 30 yard goal. The
Washington club came right back
with a try and a conversion to lead
5-3 at the half. Washington which
displayed outstanding scrum
pursuit all afternoon, then scored a
try in the opening minutes of the
second half, as scrummer Mike
Murphy took it in. Virginia
narrowed the score to 8-6, when
Furniss converted a penalty kick,
but Washington scored again on a
try, and upped their lead to 11-6.

In a repeat of last year's
Commonwealth Cup final against
Old Blue, the Wahoo ruggers kept
play within the Washington 25 yard
line but couldn't score the tying
try, as Washington hung on for the
victory. The Cavaliers, however,
exacted some revenge as they
outlasted everyone at the party
Saturday night. Jim Hawkes and
Byron Shankman led the winning
effort.

In the consolation game on
Sunday, Virginia battered hapless
Duke, 19-3. Henry Dukley, who did
not play against Washington, put on
a fine display of running and
kicking from his fly-half position.
Byron Shankman. Courtney
Hoopes, and Marty Millicliap all
played well on defense, as Duke's
attack was well contained.

Tries were scored by Terry
Daniels, Shankman, Sam Robinson,
and two by Hoopes. Robinson, a
second-year Med student and a 9.7
sprinter, scored on a dazzling 85
yard run. He also turned in a 40
yarder on which he failed to score
because he ran out of the try zone
before he could slow up enough to
touch the ball down.
