Oarsmen Prepare For
Cherry Blossom Regatta

Virginia's crew club has been on
the water and pursuing a vigorous
schedule in preparation for the first
event, the Cherry Blossom Regatta,
in Washington on April 5.

The Rivanna Reservoir is the
scene of the workouts. The program
consists of nine workouts a
week. Monday through Friday the
team has regular afternoon practices,
and in addition there are
sessions on Tuesday, Thursday, and
Saturday mornings.

During the next week, while
most University students will be
taking a refreshing respite, the
oarsmen will remain in Charlottesville
to polish their style in
two-a-day practices.

As last year, the Yale Crew will
visit the University and work out
with the Cavalier crew. The Elis will
be bringing four crews, two of
upperclassmen and two of freshmen.

The traditionally powerful Yale
team will help by setting an
example of style for the young
Virginia oarsmen. Yale's coach Jim
Rathschmidt, has built up the Elis
over his years at Yale. In 1956 his
team was the Olympic Champion.

Their varsity's first boat averages
a little over 200 pounds. The junior
varsity is just a little under this
average and the freshman's boat
average is 185.

Marist College will join in the
workouts on Tuesday and Wednesday
of next week before traveling
on south.

Crew, a relatively new club sport
at the University, is still building
and the oarsmen are gathering
experience. The average for the
team right now is 185 pounds.

In the stroke position for the
Cavaliers is Harrison O'Connor. The
other positions are Bob Tuke,
seven, Jack Plackter, six, Tom
Lincoln five, Steve Plott, four, Pete
Luke, three, Rich Davisson or Bill
Cascle, two, and Jon Woodall or
George Peterson, in the bow.
Buddy Sydenstricker will be the
coxswain.

With this crew the Cavaliers hop
to get in some competition with
Yale's second boat in preparation
for the Cherry Blossom Regatta.

This regatta will be held on the
Potomac River with Georgetown,
George Washington, and Marietta,
St. Joseph's and Villanova all
competing with Virginia.

Virginia's crew has three upper class
boats and two first-year boats.

There will be two home events
this season. On April the crew races
with Drexel and the Citadel and on
April 19 VCU and East Carolina
will provide the opposition.
