John Roche, South Carolina's
sensational backcourt ace, completed
a South Carolina sweep of
ACC honors as he became the first
sophomore ever to be named ACC
player-of-the-year, Earlier USC
coach Frank McGuire was named
coach-of-the-year. Roche edged out
UNC's Charlie Scott for the honor
in a two-man race. Roche received
56 votes, while Scott was named on
39 ballots.
ACC teams fared well in post-season
tournaments held over the
weekend. Not only did UNC with
amazing Charlie Scott capture its
third consecutive NCAA Eastern
Regional crown, but South Carolina
advanced to the quarter-finals of
the N.I.T. against Army by upending
Southern Illinois.
In lacrosse action over the
weekend. Maryland pulled a shocker
by upsetting powerful Mary
Washington, 7-6.
Lefty Driesell has announced
that he will leave Davidson's NCAA
Eastern runner ups to take over the
coaching reins of Maryland's
troubled Terrapins. The academic,
status of Davidson star Mike Maloy
may have prompted the move
Unless his grades improve, chances
are that Maloy will watch the
Wildcats from the bench next year.
