Kehoe Explains
Terps' Position
In ward ouster

Maryland Athletic Director Jim
Kehoe had "no comment"
yesterday when asked about his
plans to replace former football
coach Bob Ward, who resigned
Tuesday. Ward was the subject of a
petition signed by 113 Maryland
football players in an effort to get a
new coach for the Terrapins.

Ward had failed to show up at
the second of two scheduled
meetings with his players. At the
first meeting the players had stated
their grievances and Ward was
supposed to reply at the second.
After failing to appear, Ward
conferred with Kehoe, and his
resignation ensued. Neither man
had any comment to make at the
announcement.

The players released a statement
saying that they claim no victory,
and had done what they thought
best for the program and the
school. They said they were, "sorry
that the personality conflict
existed and that an understanding
could not be reached.

Sources in College Park
speculated that an assistant coach
from Ward's staff would be
designated as interim coach for
spring practice, while the search for
a new mentor was going on.
