N.C. State Captures
ACC Championship

For the third year in a row,
Virginia's mermen topped the ACC
second division, finishing fifth in
the annual Conference swimming
championships Saturday. For
Coach Ralph Law, the finish was
predictable; without the new pool,
and the scholarships offered by the
top four finishers (N.C. State, UNC,
South Carolina, and Maryland),
fifth becomes a far more
respectable finish than it appears.

North Carolina State ran away
from all the rest, in winning her
fourth straight championship with a
record accumulation of 584 total
points. Wolfpack swimmers
managed to take 16 of 18
individual events, recording
one-two finishes in six of them.

In dropping only the three
meter diving and the 100 meter
backstroke, the Pack managed to
finish 221 points ahead of
runner-up North Carolina. Third
place went to South Carolina with
343 points, and fourth to Maryland
with 328.

Down in the second division
came Virginia, 84, Wake Forest, 83,
Duke, 77, and Clemson, 21.

The individual star of the entire
meet had to be freshman John
Long of N.C. State, who won three
events, in addition to swimming on
two winning relays. State had three
double winners as well: Steve
McGrain, Eric Schwall, and Tom
Evans.

The best Cavalier performances
came from Alex Shaw, who came in
ninth in the 1650 free, and Steve
Remine, who provided another
ninth in the three meter diving.
Remine's feat is noteworthy, since
he has no three meter board to
practice on at Virginia, and hi
performance by necessity had to be
somewhat ad lib. The Virginia 400
freestyle relay placed a respectable
sixth.
