Cavayearlings Close Out

Center Scott McCandlish made
good on a free throw with 26
seconds left to ice a 75-72 victory
over Old Dominion College's
Freshmen last Thursday night.

The first-year men had fought
back from an early half surge by
the Baby Monarchs and did not
take the lead until the clock
showed 3:47 remaining. Then Chip
Miller, who scored all eight of his
points in the second half,
connected on a 25 foot jump shot
to make the score 72-70.
Approximately two and a half
minutes of sloppy ball-handling and
good defense later forward Frank
Dewitt picked up a loose ball,
dribbled down the court and laid it
up and in for a four point lead,
74-72.

But the Little Monarchs' Dave
Twardzik, a hustling guard from
Pennsylvania who led the ODC fast
break all night, quickly dropped in
a field goal to close the gap to two.
Then Coach Dick DiBiaso ordered a
ll and the Cavayearlings went
into a deep freeze until McCandlish
was fouled. After McCandlish's
successful conversion and an
successful ODC field goal
attempt the Cavayearlings held the
ball until the clock ran out.

The Cavayearlings also had to
play catch-up in the first half when
they had to overcome an earlier
surge by ODC in which they found
themselves down 10-2.

Rash scored a season high 22
points and McCandlish tallied 21.
