Ruggers Kick Off Spring Season

The imminence of spring is attracting
more than lovers and songbirds
to Bonnycastle Dell this week.
The Virginia branch of the Ancient
and Honorable Breed of Rugby
enthusiasts announced its Special
Grand Opening first practice, to be
held next Tuesday in the Dell at 4.

A few of the Club members got
a head start on the season this week
in New Orleans where the Tulane
club was holding a special Mardi
Gras tournament. No news from
Louisiana has been heard since the
ruggers departed Friday, however,
and experienced rugby observers
are expressing privately their
doubts that the players were ever in
any shape to play.

Despite, or perhaps because of,
such a start, the ruggers are anticipating
a successful spring campaign.
The schedule includes all the
Eastern rugby powers, and will culminate
in the famous Commonwealth
Cup tournament, to be held
here in May. The winner of the Cup
is generally considered the best
Rugby side in the East. Old Blue of
New York is the defending champ,
having beaten the Cavaliers in last
spring's final.

The Club, whose organization,
according to one member, "is
derived from the Marx Brothers"
has no coach, no compulsory practice,
and takes a dim view of
conditioning. Its after game parties
feature bawdy songs and liberal
quantities of refreshments denied
to participants in some of the more
organized University sports.

The powers-that-be have relegated
the Club to practicing in the
narrow confines of the Dell, but
have allowed the team, once again,
to play its games on Nameless
Field—off-center goal posts and all.
