Without McCandlish

Unbeaten Cavayearlings Win

By Dave Marshall
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

Saturday night the undefeated
Cavayearlings extended their
victory string to four with a
convincing 85-64 win over Fork
Union.

In evening Fork Union's record
at 2-2 the victors were forced to
play without Scott McCandlish.
The star center, averaging 21.3
points and 14.7 rebounds a game,
was recovering from an ankle sprain
suffered in the 81-59 Duke win.
But even without McCandlish the
Cavayearlings had little trouble.

With 11:45 gone in the first half
Tom Bagby made a lay-up, assisted
by Jim Shroeder, to break a 15-15
tie. Then Chip Miller connected on
a jumper from the key and, in
thirty seconds, a thirty foot jumper
from the top of the key. Baskets by
Shroeder, Bagby and Frank Dewitt
increased the lead to ten, 27-17,
and the First-year men, directed by
Miller, maintained the margin until
halftime. The halftime score was
43-34.

After halftime the Cavayearlings
were led by Tim Rash, who had
been yanked early in the first half
because of three quick personal
fouls. Rash scored 14 second half
points, as well as teaming with
Miller, DeWitt and Bagby on
numerous fast breaks.

The Cavayearlings, with Coach
Dick DiBiasio substituting freely,
increased their lead to as much as 28
points, 72-44, in completing the
rout.

Coach DiBiasio was pleased with
the team's "balance" and
"teamwork", especially among the
reserves. He was impressed with the
Hal Trentham - Jim Shroeder
combination which replaced
McCandlish. He also said that
McCandlish will probably be ready
for the game with North Carolina's
undefeated freshman team
this Tuesday in Chapel Hill.

Tim Rash led all scorers with 19
points on 8 of 13 from the floor
and three for three from the foul
line. Chip Miller netted 18 points
on nine of twelve field goal
attempts. Frank DeWitt hit on
seven of eleven field goal tries and
two of four free throws for 16
points. Tom Bagby garnered 16
points by connecting on seven of
eleven field goals and two of four
free throws. Jim Shroeder led all
rebounders with ten.

The Cavayearlings hit on 37 of
65 attempts from the floor for
55.2% to raise their seasonal
average to 53.3%(138 of 259).
However they only made 11 of 20
free throws to lower their
percentage to 70.7. Scott
McCandlish leads the team in field
goals and floor percentage with 27
Of 38 field goals for 71.1%. Frank
DeWitt is the leading rebounder
behind McCandlish with 39 for an
average of 9.8 a game.
