Mermen Demolish ODC, William & Mary

By Hugh Antrim
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

The mermen got back to Charlottesville
a little late for the Duke
mirage Wednesday night, but when
they arrived from their road trip,
they were two wins for the better.
The Virginia swimmers shrugged off
Old Dominion, 64-40, and then
surprised the William and Mary
Indians, 71-33.

The swimmers now stand with
an impressive 4-0 record and are in
position to move in on the state
championship. Any such state title
hopes hinge on future meets with
VMI and Washington and Lee.

Old Dominion, a team in the
rebuilding stage, offered the
Cavaliers little resistance. The score,
64-40, probably does not indicate
the relative strengths of the two
squads as the mermen were
pointing toward the Williamsburg
battle.

A very important obstacle in
state competition was William and
Mary. The Indian swimmers, refusing
to use the ancient Blow
Gymnasium pool, held Wednesday's
contest in the girls' gym. Not resembling
our oversized bathtub,
this modern structure was complete
with six swimming lanes, two diving
boards, plate glass windows, and
pretty artificial lights. Appreciative
of the comfortable surroundings,
the Cavaliers responded with their
biggest win of the young season.

Coach Law was a happy man
with the 71-33 decision behind
him, and he had every right to be,
"I'm extremely pleased with the
performance of the team." Indicative
of this performance was the
record-breaking effort of first-year
man Mike Dailey in the 200 yard
butterfly. His time of 2:10.5 was
only good for a second place finish,
but this mark broke the Virginia
record by some five seconds.

Virginia was to win its share of
first places, and Coach Law cited
the Cavaliers' ability to take second
in many events as the key to the
meet, (The mermen placed second
in all but one event.) Bob Sinnott's
late surge in the 1,000 yard freestyle
was emphasized by Coach
Law as was John Shrum's runner-up
position in the 200 yard freestyle.

First-year man Alex Shaw continued
in his winning ways, taking
first places in both distance events.
Entered in only seven-events thus
far. Shaw has left his frustrated
opponents behind seven times. The
quick relay win in the opening
moments, and the one, two finish
in the 1,000 yard freestyle put the
Indians on the reservation and behind
23-2.

The swimmers face Catholic
University on Monday in
Washington in quest of the fifth
straight. Catholic appears to be
strong individually in each event,
but they lack the depth offered by
the Cavaliers.
