Cavayearlings Win Twice;
McCandlish Tops Scorers

By Dave Marshall

Virginia's First-year basketball
team gave Dick DiBiasio a smashing
debut as a college coach by rolling
over the frosh teams of Richmond
and George Washington by scores
of 92-73 and 88-56, respectively. In
doing so the Cavayearlings used
"team effort" in the form of two
agile, swarming guards (Tim Rash
and Chip Miller), two smooth
shooting forwards who also work
well inside (Frank Dewitt and Tom
Bagby) and a sky-scraper center
who hauled in numerous rebounds,
blocked many shots and scored well
inside (Scott McCandlish).

Scoring in the first half of the
Richmond clash was evenly
balanced, with the Cavayearlings
enjoying leads of from three to nine
points. The halftime score was
42-36. After the intermission the
First-year men, using speed,
accuracy and rebounding, suddenly
exploded. In the initial five minutes
they outscored Richmond 15-0 to
take a 59-36 lead. The tempo then
slowed as the Cavayearlings
maintained a 14 to 25 point lead
the rest of the contest.

There were many statistical
leaders. McCandlish scored 22
points, grabbed 18 rebounds, had
five assists and blocked five shots.
Dewitt, using fine inside moves,
scored 22 points and had nine
rebounds. The ball-hawking guards,
Rash and Miller, scored 18 and 15
points, respectively, and had eight
assists between them. Bagby bagged
11 points and somehow used his
underwhelming height to gather in
nine rebounds. Team stats gave the
Cavayearlings a 58.2% to 36.7% and
52-27 rebounding advantage.

The GW game last Saturday
night followed the same format,
close first half - runaway second
half, as the Cavayearlings went
from a 10-2 lead to a 2a three point
deficit, 29-32, to a four point edge,
38-34, by halftime. After another
good halftime pep talk the
First-year men stormed out and
gave the Colonials a spell of
dizziness comparable to some of
the University fraternities' hazing as
they out-scored GW 14-3 in the
first five minutes. The remainder of
the 20 minutes the Cavayearlings
pulled farther and farther away to
complete the 88-56 rout.

Again Coach DiBiasio was
pleased "with the fine balance and
teamwork" which was especially
evident in the second half. He
refused to single out any hero in
particular but did note that
"conditioning paid off".

Individual leaders were Scott
McCandlish (25 pts, 13 rebounds),
Chip Miller (18 pts, six assists),
Tom Bagby (16 pts, 8 rebounds)
and Tim Rash (16 pts, nine assists).
