Richmond's Spiders will provide
the opposition for the Cavaliers
when Virginia opens their season at
the archaic Arena in Richmond.

Richmond's Coach Lewis Mills
lost only one starter after his 1967
season record of 12-13. He was
voted Southern Conference Coach
of the Year for his record which
included a victory over the
Cavaliers.

The Spiders' 1968 season has
already gotten under way. It was an
unsuccessful start as they fell to
East Tennessee State, 96-83. However,
the Buanrs were last season's
top team in the Ohio Valley
Conference.

The big man for the Spiders is
All-Southern center Wilton Ford.
The 6′ 6″ senior had a scoring
average of 20.1 last season and is
expected to be the leader this year.

Right behind Ford is guard
Kenny Foster with an average of
15.4 points a game last season.
Foster, a junior, was an all-tournament
selection at guard.
Another junior guard, Picot Frazier,
is next down the scoring column at
14.5 points a game.

Backing up these scorers will be
6′ 7″ forward Frank "Dummy"
Owen and guard Bobby Ukrop
whose career so far has been one of
coming off the bench to unsettle
the opposition.

Sophomores Jim Hewitt, Ed
Surgan, Stan Ryfinski, and Phil
Bushkar should provide the depth
for the Spiders.

With all the returning lettermen
and the depth, although it is sophomore
depth, Coach Mills believes
his team, "should be a fine basketball
team if our defense comes
through."

Virginia will be relying on Tony
Kinn, Norm Carmichael, Chip Case,
Mike Wilkes, and John Gidding to
stop the Richmonders in the interconference
scrap to avenge last
season's 101-95 loss to the Spiders.

While the Cavaliers have no all
-conference players, they have the
high scoring Case and the
experienced Carmichael who has
played against the likes of Mike
Lewis and Rusty Clark to face
Richmond's Foster and Ford in
what should be an interesting opener
for Virginia.
