Harriers Triumph;
State Meet Here

By Mike DeCamps

The University of Virginia will
host the annual Virginia State Cross
Country Meet this Friday over its
5.0 mile course across the street
from University Hall.

A highly touted William and
Mary squad, about as supreme in
the state cross country as Green
Bay in the Super Bowl, will most
likely carry off all the honors again
this year. The Indians, undefeated
in dual mt competition this year,
are led by their sophomore distance
running ace, Howell Michael, who
last year turned out a 4:01 mile in
the Southern Conference Track
Meet.

The chief threat to Michael will
most likely be his own teammate,
George Davis, the state's best
steeplechase runner. Davis's ability
in the steeplechase may prove to
help him over the rugged Virginia
course that winds through rocky
paths and plowed up dirt fields.

It is even possible that William
and Mary could whitewash the rest
of their competition by getting the
first five places with such depth as
Juris Luzins, a 1:50 half miler, and a
number of sub 4:20 milers. Outside
threats for places in the top five
will be Joe Painter, Virginia Tech's
number one runner, Fred Guest,
Richmond's premier harrier, and
Greg Laneand Rick Katz, Virginia's
number one and two runners.

Virginia Tech looks to be the
only team with a chance of even
challenging William and Mary. Virginia's
Cavaliers, with a strong performance,
could beat out Tech,
although Tech beat the harriers in
regular season competition, 20-38.
The Cavaliers have come on strong
in the end of the year, finishing
their dual meet competition last
Saturday morning with a 15-50
romp over Old Dominion.

In the Old Dominion meet, the
Cavaliers took the first seven places
with first place going to Rick Katz
in 27:18.8, well off the course
record of 26:32 held by Lane who
finished second. Craig Gaarder, Pat
Conroy, and Frank Lavarre completed
the top five for Virginia who
finished their dual meet competition
with a 3-5 record.
