College Football Review

Ohio State, USC Triumph

By Ted McKean

While the South Carolina
Gamecocks were pinning a real
shocker on the Cavaliers, a number
of other lively surprises were pulied
off in college football action
Saturday. The nation's top teams
all survived the weekend without
upset, but many felt the pressure of
contests too close for their liking.

Top ranked Southern Cal just
got by Oregon, 20-13. The fabulous
O.J. Simpson was held to 67 yards
rushing, although he surpassed the
1000 yard rushing mark for the
season. It was the only time this
season that Simpson has been held
to under 100 yards a game. The
Trojans staved off a last minute
Oregon drive to ice the game.

Second ranked Ohio State
maintained its undefeated status by
edging Michigan State, 25-20. The
Spartans fumbled four times, and
had three passes intercepted to
open the way for the Rose Bowl
bound Buckeyes.

In a game which could have well
gone either way, undefeated Penn
State just nipped Army, 28-24. It
took a 53 yard return of an onside
kick attempt by State's All
American Ted Kwalick to put the
game away safely in the hands of
the Lions. The Cadets had rallied
for 17 points in the final quarter to
throw a real scare into the Penn
Staters.

The two teams who will battle
each other for the Ivy League title
were determined Saturday, as
Harvard knocked off undefeated
Penn, and undefeated Yale
squashed Dartmouth. Harvard had
no trouble with surprising Penn,
winning 28-6. Brian Dowling and
Cal Hill led the Eli boys past
Dartmouth, 41-27. These teams
meet this weekend to determine the
Ivy champ.

In ACC action, Virginia did not
produce the only surprise. North
Carolina State was upset by
Clemson, 24-19, as Tiger back Ray
Yauger went into the end zone for
a score with less than a minute left
in the game. Clemson had led
throughout most of the game until
State took the lead at 19-14 in the
final quarter, only to lose it with
seconds remaining.

Duke pulled a big upset, in
defeating Georgia Tech by the
sound margin of 46-30. Sophomore
quarterback Leo Hart put the ball
in the air for three touchdowns in
the second quarter, and the
Techmen from that point could not
rally to overcome the Blue Devils.

Wake Forest finally had the
chance to show its stuff, as the
Deacons, led by Freddie Summers,
overwhelmed Maryland, 38-14.
Wake certainly must be glad to
return to conference play, after
facing such powers as Purdue and
Minnesota in the preceding weeks.
