Cavayearlings Toppled
As UNC Wins, 25—10

By Dave Marshall

The University of Virginia
Cavayearlings lost to the University
of North Carolina Tar Babies by the
score of 25 to 10 last Friday. In
suffering their first loss after two
wins, the injury-plagued first-year
players were subdued by a
pugnacious rushing offense and a
tenacious rushing defense - a
familiar combination to Wahoo
followers.

The North Carolina freshmen
were led by bruising fullback Geoff
Hamlin, who rushed for 93 yards
on 28 carries and scored three
touchdowns on runs of one, three,
and five yards.

The afternoon game began in a
lacklustre way for the
Cavayearlings with the Tar Babies'
Jim Webster returning a punt 40
yards to set up North Carolina's
initial touchdown, which was
eventually scored on a two yard run
by Quarterback Charlie Turco. The
conversion kick was wide. In this
early going the Cavayearlings lost
both starting defensive tackles (Paul
Ziegler and David DeBra) for the
season due to injury.

In the second period Virginia
sustained a 45 yard drive with Mike
Cubbage sneaking over from the
one for the touchdown. Dave
Foreman added the extra point and
the Wahoos led 7-6. From then on
the name of the game became
defense until halftime.

After intermission the Tar
Babies suddenly became very
offensive and marched 65 yards in
10 plays to the Virginia 5 yard line,
from where Hamlin bulled his way
into the end zone. The pass for a
two point conversion failed and the
Frosh led the First-year men 12-7.
But again the Orange and Blue
came back, not through the offense
but through the defense.

Defensive end Bill Gardner hit
quarterback Turco, whereupon
Turco fumbled the ball and the
Cavayearlings recovered on the
Carolina 26. Turco was injured on
the play. After three unsuccessful
plays Dave Foreman came into
make good on a 42 yard field goal
to narrow the margin to two,
12-10, as the period ended.

On Carolina's next series Paul
Miller came in to quarterback the
Tar Babies and promptly
engineered a 16 play, 70 yard
touchdown march which was
terminated by Hamlin's one yard
plunge into the end zone. David
McGlohon booted Carolina's first
extra point and the North Carolina
frosh led 19-12.

The last Tar Baby score came as
an indirect result of a thirteen yard
punt by star receiver Hal Trentham,
who saw his punting average dip to
39.1. The North Carolina Frosh
struggled 39 yards in eleven plays
(aided by a 15 yard penalty for a
personal foul)
for their final
touchdown. Once again Hamlin
crossed the goal line.

The main trouble with the
Cavayearlings seemed to be a lack
of togetherness (almost half a
dozen men played regularly who
had not before) and the fact that
they were injury plagued. In fact
Coach Tom Fletcher stated that he
had "never been associated with
that many injuries." Also, the holes
provided by the offensive interior
linemen were almost nonexistent at
times.
