Davidson Ready
For Cavaliers

There are two questions which
have been running through the
minds of Virginia supporters all
week. The first question which has
been displayed by several hundred
students around the Grounds since
Monday is "Who is Davidson?" The
second question, but by no stretch
of the imagination less important, is
"What is happening to the
Cavaliers?"
In answer to the first query,
Davidson is a small college of 1,000
students (although their stadium
has a seating capacity of 9,000),
tucked back in the rolling hills of
Davidson, North Carolina, just
outside of Charlotte.
Last season the Wildcats
compiled a 4-5 record, losing to
such powerhouse teams as West
Virginia, East Carolina, Richmond,
The Citadel, and VMI. So far this
season they have lost to Bucknell
22-13, and to the Richmond
Spiders 24-14. It appears that they
are at least a fairly consistent team.
The Wildcats are without their
big quarterback, Jim Poole, whom
they lost through graduation last
season. Poole has all but one of
Davidson's individual passing
records. At the helm this year is
6-1, 190-pound junior Gordon
Slade. Slade is a passing
quarterback. He threw 45 times
against Richmond last Saturday
night.
The Cavalier defensive line loves
to put passing quarterbacks on the
seat of their pants. They dumped
Mike Phipps eight times and then
came back to throw VMI
quarterback Murphy Sprinkel 15
times for a total of 23 times in two
games.
The statistics answer the second
question. They lead the ACC in
scoring, with 26.5 average, rushing
offense, with a 236.0 yard average,
and in rushing defense by holding
the opposition to a mere 63.5 yards
on the ground. The Cavaliers also
are second in the ACC in total
offense and total defensive.
In the individual ACC statistics,
Frank Quayle leads in rushing with
a fantastic 9.2 yard average per
game. The number two rusher in
the conference, Warren Muir of
South Carolina, has a 4.8 rushing
average.
Tomorrow at 1:30 in Scott
Stadium the crowd will see once
again "What is happening to the
Cavaliers," and by the end of the
game they may ask "Who WAS
Davidson?"
