In Season Opener
Cavayearlings Oppose Tech
By Davis Marshall
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer
Blacksburg will be the scene
Friday afternoon, as the Virginia
Cavayearlings play the Baby
Gobblers of Virginia Tech in the
season's football opener for both
squads. The game, to be played in
Lane Stadium at 2 o'clock, will
feature the traditional freshman
strongboys of the state.
Virginia will base its offensive
attack on the aerial talents of three
top freshmen prospects: Mike
Cubbage, Larry Alberts and Randy
Gustafson. Cubbage is well known
around Charlottesville as an all
around athlete and former all-state
quarterback from Lane High
School.
Alberts, who threw 36
touchdown passes in his last two
years of high school, is known as
the "quickest arm in the east." Gustafson
is another all-state
quarterback from Texas.
The three will be throwing to
such receivers as Bobby McGrail
(6′0″, 185 lbs.), Ronni Similo
(6′1″, 185 lbs) and Gary Helman
(fullback-5′11″, 180 lbs.).
Mainstays of the offensive line
are expected to be center Gib
Walton (6′2″, 205 lbs.), tackle Tom
Gross (6′3″, 220 lbs.) and Similo.
Other offensive starters will be,
Jamey Davis at tackle, Jerry Taylor
at guard, Tom Kennedy at strong
guard, and Tom Lacy at tail back.
The defense should be anchored
by tackle Paul Ziegler, early
scrimmage leader, (6′6″, 218 lbs.),
tackle Tom Gross (6′3″, 220 lbs.)
and Bob Burkley (6′3″, 210 lbs.),
an all conference end from
Pennsylvania.
Rounding the platoon out will
be Bill Gardner (6′2″, 210 lbs.) at
end, Gilbert Smith at middle guard,
Bill Davis at safety, Joe Smity
(6′0″, 185 lbs) and Greg Dickerhoff
(5′11″, 190 lbs.) as linebackers,
Ziegler at tackle.
Head Coach Tom Fletcher's
kickers will be Dave Forman and
Gary Helman, while Wayne
Trentham will be handling the
punting chores.
The coaching staff of former
Clemson starts Jimmy Addison and
Jim Abrams, former Princeton
player and coach, Dave bbican,
Roy Gice and Bill Safero has done a
creditable job with the team.
The Cavayearlings have been
very fortunate so far this season,
having sustained only one serious
injury (Tom Beirs - a top prospect
on the offensive line, with a broken
leg).
The outcome of the game will
be hard to tell, since both teams are
untested. Naturally both lack
experience, but Tech seems to have
the edge in depth.
