Crewmen Open Fall Practice
As Thirty Veterans Return

The University's crew began fall
practice Monday in anticipation of
a second successful year. With
thirty returning oarsmen, several
added upper classmen, and forty to
fifty first year men, the crew will
have the depth and means to
greatly expand its operations.

The fall program calls for
rowing three times a week until
Christmas or as long as weather
permits. During the winter, weight
training will be instituted along
with some running to prepare for
the Spring season.

Once Spring arrives, rowing will
begin in earnest. There will be
practice six to eight times a week,
and the various crews will begin to
be formed.

Boatings, that is, positions in
the first, second, or third varsity or
freshman crews, will not be
determined until the Spring.

This policy allows coach Tim
Kerr to decide on his boatings after
seeing each oarsman row and work
for five months.

In short, the initiative to make
the first eight remains with the
individual.

The Rowing Association, as the
club is called, hopes that any
interested upper classman will come
out to row this year.

Previous experience is by no
means necessary, the best example
being last year's Varsity Eight
which included only two
experienced oarsmen.

That crew, though outweighed
in every race by their opponents,
rowed to a winning season and a
fifth place consolation finish in the
Dad Vail Regatta.
