Ex-Virginia Great Killed In Accident

A foggy road in the darkness of
summer night meant tragedy for
one of the finest athletes ever to
take his degree from the University.

On July 19 Scott Montgomery
was killed in a single car crash while
returning to his home in
Watertown, New York. It was
about 1:20 a.m. when the car
Montgomery was operating missed
the curve on a New York highway
and struck a tree.

A June graduate of the
University, Montgomery was
planning to return to Charlottesville
this fall to study medicine.

A 6-3, 200-pounder, he
lettered in football as a tight end
after captaining the freshman squad
during his first year at Virginia. He
also lettered three times and was
the 1968 captain of the lacrosse
team.

One of two seniors on last year's
squad, Montgomery was a reliable
performer at the midfielder
position.

Montgomery captained all three
major sports at Watertown High
School and was consequently
named as one of New York's
All-State senior athletes.

A popular man off the athletic
field as well as on, Montgomery was
elected president of Sigma Nu
fraternity. He was also a member of
the Z Society and Eli Banana
Ribbon Society.
