Co-captain Pete Petit won two
individual events and ran on both
winning relays to pace Virginia's
cindermen to an 84-61 triumph
last Wednesday over VMI. The
victory ended a four year string
of defeats at the hands of the Keydets
and upped the Cavalier's outdoor
record to 3-0.

Virginia gained the upper hand
early by winning six field events,
including a sweep of the long
jump. Mike Wilkes, javelin and
discus, and Mike Harvey, long
and triple jump, once more captured
their specialties while Al
Sinesky and Ham Myers gained
first place finishes in the shot
put and pole vault respectively.

In the running events the Cavalier
440 relay team, composed of
Ron Shorb, Tom Bake Jeff Calamos,
and Pete Petit remained undefeated
in dual meet competition
by winning the event in 42.8
seconds. Petit ran away from the
field in both the 100 and 220
in the times of 9.8 and 22.7
seconds. In both races Virginia's
Shorb gained second place.

First-year man John Morris also
kept his dual meet record unblemished
in the 440 by posting
an exceptional 49.2 second victory.
Later Morris teamed up with
Petit, Bob Niles, and Jim Crk-
man to win the mile relay.

Important in the winning cause
were second place finished gained
by Ed Campbell, high hurdles;
Dennis Borchers, intermediate
hurdles; John Wilson, one mile;
and Brian Magoon who was beaten
at the wire in a gallant effort in
the two mile.
