Stickmen Top Brown, 11-7;
Rullman, Morrow Lead Way
By Ted McKean
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer
In what would have to be termed
one of the original cliff-hangers,
the Virginia lacrosse team defeated
Brown yesterday by an 11-7 score.
Rick Morrow and Charlie Rullman
led the way for the Cavaliers,
tallying three goals apiece.
Although the final score does
not appear to be so close due to
a Virginia scoring splurge in the
overtime, the game could not have
been tighter.
Rullman Begins Rout
In the fourth period, Brown
had pulled out to what appeared
to be a commanding 6-3 lead in
the low scoring contest. However,
with six minutes remaining, Rullman
rammed in a shot that was
to begin the Virginia rout.
At 1:25, Morrow fired in his
second goal of the day to bring
the Cavaliers to within one tally
of the startled Bruins. Then Morrow
added the icing to Virginia's
cake as he made a spectacular
shot with only six seconds left to
send the game into two 5-minute
overtime periods.
Brown Clutches
The visitors, now visibly shaken,
could only respond half-heartedly
to the challenge of the resurgent
Cavaliers. Within two minutes of
the first extra period, Captain
Scott Montgomery and Rullman
both added scores to give the Virginians
an 8-6 lead.
Roger Archibald closed out the
overtime period with his first score
of the day, upping the total to
9-6.
In the second overtime, Rullman
opened with his third score of the
day. Brown added one more score,
and the Cavaliers' Peter Kirk
ended the Virginia scoring barrage
to finalize the score at 11-7.
Sloppy Play
Discounting the final five
minutes of play, the performance
of the Virginia stickmen was far
below what has come to be their
expected calibre of play. Throughout
the contest, the Cavaliers appeared
to have trouble becoming
settled. Bad passes and bad catches
characterized the sloppy game.
The Cavaliers never the less
showed that they have the makings
of a top team, for when the occasion
demanded, they were in
complete control of the game.
Without a doubt, the Brown
team put up a spirited battle,
and threw a scare into the hearts
of the Virginia fans.
